BENEFITS OF THE SUN AND DAILY SUN RITUALS
The Sun is the bestower of light to the totality of the cosmos. It is the life-giving force that sustains us on Earth. The Sun offers its rays to nourish and illuminate the world around us, and its light interacts with our bodies in ways that help regulate our own biological rhythms. Without the Sun, we couldn’t exist!
Across human history, the Sun has been revered as a source of life, power and divine presence. It has been personified as a deity, woven into creation myths and placed at the centre of religious and cosmological traditions across the world — Ra in ancient Egypt, Helios in Greece, Surya in Hindu traditions, Inti in the Inca tradition, and many others. And while we may no longer build temples to the Sun, we still gather beneath it.
Whether you live rurally, in the city or by the sea, those waking moments at sunrise and the closing chapter of sunset, influence the way we come together in community. We schedule morning walks and coffees, afternoon picnics and drinks, timing them around the light so that we can bear witness to the way the Sun colours the sky.
The Sun's instinctual pull on us is ancient. And not just because we feel called to marvel at its beauty, but because our bodies are literally designed to respond to it. Sunlight offers a biological signal that helps nourish and orient the rhythms of the human body.
In fact, there have been many studies that claim tremendous benefits from the simple act of standing outside during those first few hours of morning light - when the UV index is low. Light entering the eyes is one of the most direct pathways of communication between the external environment and the brain. It helps anchor our internal clock and influences the hormonal and neurological rhythms that regulate sleep, alertness and mood.

Of course, wise interaction with the Sun is always encouraged. We don’t need to stare directly at the Sun or expose ourselves to harmful levels of UV to experience the benefits of natural daylight. The invitation is simply to be outside in unfiltered light for just 5 minutes in the morning.
And while a little morning light has profound benefits to our physiological health - I’d also like to encourage a mindfulness practice to add to this daily ritual.
Within the first hour of waking, find a comfortable place to be outside. You can take your tea or coffee with you - but try to refrain from bringing your phone. The idea here is that, before you give yourself over to the demands of the day, let yourself be in total receivership. You do not have to do anything except be with yourself and the generous life giving force of the Sun.
Feel the Sun's nurturing rays on your skin and let it warm your belly as your breath rises and falls. Let this be a moment to come home to yourself. To be in your body and for the sensation of the sun on your limbs to be a reminder that you are here. You are breathing and you are alive.
The Sun has risen to meet another day with you — and that, in itself, is something to be grateful for.
