What is the difference between gold plated and gold vermeil?

Both gold plated and gold vermeil jewellery feature a layer of gold over another metal. The difference is in the base metal and thickness of the gold layer.

18K Gold Vermeil

Superior to Gold Plating, Gold Vermeil (pronounced ‘ver-may’), is a premium plating technique using a thick 18k gold layer of 2.5 microns. A long-lasting plated finish designed to endure everyday wear. To compare, most 18K gold plated jewellery is between 0.8- 1 microns, with fast fashion as low as 0.03 microns.

18K Gold Plated

Our 18k gold plate pieces use a gold layer of 1.5-2 microns, above the industry standard. It also allows us to keep pieces at an affordable price point. Gold plating is an affordable alternative to gold vermeil while still providing a durable and long-lasting finish with proper care.

Why choose gold plated jewellery?

Gold plating allows us to create considered jewellery in our signature warm 18k gold tone, while making our designs more accessible.

Our gold plated pieces feature a 1.5-2 micron layer of gold, above the industry standard. With thoughtful care, creating a durable finish.

What is Kirstin Ash gold plated jewellery made from?

Our 18k gold plated jewellery is primarily crafted with a 925 sterling silver base, finished with a layer of 18k gold.

Selected statement styles feature a brass base, chosen to create a lighter weight feel while allowing us to bring larger, more sculptural designs to life.

Can I wear gold plated jewellery every day?

Yes. Our gold plated jewellery is designed to be worn and enjoyed as part of your everyday collection. With thoughtful care, you can help extend the life of the gold finish.

To preserve your pieces, we recommend removing gold plated jewellery before swimming, exercising, showering, bathing and sleeping. Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, chemicals and cleaning products, as moisture and chemicals can gradually affect the finish.

How do I care for gold plated jewellery?

Gold plating naturally softens with wear, but with care you can help preserve its finish for longer.

Store your pieces in a cool, dry place away from humidity and direct sunlight. When your jewellery needs a refresh, gently polish it with a soft microfibre cloth.

For more detailed guidance, read our Care Guide.

Can gold plated jewellery be engraved?

Yes. Selected styles can be personalised with engraving, allowing you to add a meaningful date, name, word, location or symbol.
